Practical abilities ↑, Language skills ↑, Cultural experience, and school credits US Army in Korea internship program completion ceremony, joined by 53 people from 6 universities including YU 111 YU students joined internship since 2011 [February 10, 2017] <US Army base internship program completion ceremony> “This is an internship in Korea, but by working at a US military base, this is a 'four-in-one' program to raise practical abilities, English skills, global cultural experience, and even gain school credits. I strongly recommend this!" YU (President Sur Gil-soo) held the '2016 Second Semester US Army in Korea Internship Program' completion ceremony at the Cheonma Art Center Sapphire Hall from 1 p.m. on the 10th. The US Army in Korea internship program is a program for students to work as interns at US army bases located in the Yeongnam region to gain practical experiences. The commute is easy as interns can participate in the internship from their home in Korea, and is highly popular among students as it offers the opportunity to improve language skills and have cultural experiences while working with US military personnel and soldiers. Over 100 people participated in the ceremony including key figures from the US Army base such as Brigadier General John P. Sullivan of the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, and 53 students from six universities including 14 from YU received their certificate of completion. YU School of Materials Science and Engineering senior Jin Young-joo (22) who participated in this program said, "I took part in this program because I thought I would be able to improve my English while working as an intern," and added, "I worked at an elementary school at a US base. It was an opportunity to gain a better understanding on American culture. I would strongly recommend other students to also participate in internship programs at the US base." YU has been offering this as part of the overseas field experience program from 2011 and from 2013, seven universities including YU, Kyungpook National University, Keimyung University, Catholic University of Daegu, Daegu University, Daegu Haany University, and Pusan National University signed official MOUs with the US military bases to operate internship programs. YU students selected as interns worked at US military bases located in Daegu such as Camp Walker, Camp Henry, and Camp George. Participating students work for six months at the US Army bases and earn school credits (16-18 credits) as overseas field experience learning, as well as a small scholarship. YU President Sur Gil-soo said, "The US Army internship program is a very good program where students can reap the effects of overseas internship programs while staying in Korea." He added, "I hope that this acts as an opportunity for students to not only earn school credits, but also acquire various practical experiences in the field and improve global capacities through actual exchange with US soldiers and military personnel." Meanwhile, a total of 111 students participated in the US Army in Korea internship program since 2011, and eight students are scheduled to participate in the internship for the first semester of 2017.

Cheonma Art Center Chamber Hall Graduate School Graduation Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on the 22nd 94 PhDs, 656 master's and 3,901 bachelor's at each college, graduate school and professional and special graduate schools [February 22, 2017] <The 2016 Graduate Ceremony was held at the YU Cheonma Art Center on the 22nd.> YU (President Sur Gil-soo) held the 2016 graduate school graduation ceremony at the Cheonma Art Center Chamber Hall at 10:30 a,m, on the 22nd. The colleges, two professional graduate schools such as the School of Medicine and Law School, and nine special graduate schools such as the Graduate School of Business Administration, Public Administration, Environment & Public Health Studies, Sports Science, Clinical Pharmacy, Education, Engineering, Arts & Design, and the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul also held their individual graduation ceremonies. 3,901 bachelors, 656 masters and 94 PhDs received their degrees at YU on this day. YU President Sur Gil-soo, Graduate School Dean Lee Tae-jin and Yeungnam Education Foundation Director Lee Cheon-soo attended the graduation ceremony to congratulate the graduating students. Mr. Sur said at the graduating dinner, "I would like to congratulate you on earning your honorable degrees through your great efforts over several years on behalf of YU." He added, "Graduation is not the end. It is a new beginning to a different world. By taking on the challenges with noble ideals and visions, I am confident that you will be the masters of the future." In particular, 254 international students (28 bachelors', 210 masters', 16 PhDs) received their diplomas including Mr. Gholami Farkoush Saeid (33) from Iran who majored in electric engineering, and 390 undergraduates who graduated received dual diplomas.

64 winners in the professional and creative sectors Award winners in domestic and international contests, 1st place in international academic conference, publication in SCI international journals, passing certified appraiser and customs broker exams during enrollment, and other 'Y-Type Human Resources' in various fields [February 23, 2017] <2016 Second Half Y-Type Human Resources Award Ceremony> YU (President Sur Gil-soo) held the 2016 second half 'Y-Type Human Resources' awards. This was organized to congratulate students who participated in national and international contests in the second half of 2016 or who published papers in SCI-level international journals as main authors. 'Y-Type Human Resources' are the ideal human resources pursued by YU and refers to human resources with both creativity and progressiveness based on character. At this award ceremony held at the YU Cheonma Art Center Sapphire Hall at 3 p.m. on the 23rd, a total of 64 students won the Y-Type Human Resource Award including 16 individual awards and four teams (48 students) for group awards. YU students took first place in various domestic and foreign contests from July to December last year receiving the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award and the Minister of Employment and Labor Award, while also being recognized for their expertise and creativity in various fields by taking first place in international academic conferences and publishing their research in SCI international journals. In particular, Min Ji-hoon (25), who is planning to enroll in the YU Graduate School (School of Materials Science and Engineering), received attention by taking first place in an international academic conference joined by master's and PhD researchers from around the world in 2016 as an undergraduate when he was a senior. Min participated in ‘IPMC 2016 (International Process Metallurgy Conference 2016)’, an international conference on metals joined by over 200 master's and PhD researchers from around the world including Indonesia, Canada, Singapore and Finland, and took first place in the poster session showing the results of over 100 studies. Most of the participants are master's and PhD level researchers, and it is very rare for an undergraduate to win the award. The School of Mechanical Engineering club 'YUSAE' that took overall first place in the Baja SAE KOREA at Yeungnam University 2016 and the School of International Economics and Business' 'International Economics Research Society' that won the grand prize for the second consecutive year in the '2016 College Student Trade Remedy Contest' were selected for group awards and therefore won the Y-Type Human Resource Award. Also, Lee Dae-ha (24), a junior in the School of International Economics and Business who passed the certified appraiser examination as a student, Lee Jae-hyung (24, scheduled to enroll in graduate school) in the School of Chemistry who was recognized for his research capacities by publishing two studies in SCI international academic journals as a senior, and Lim Da-ye (22) in the College of Music (major in orchestra) who won first place in the '13th National Orchestra Concours' were also selected as the 2016 Y-Type Human Resources after being recognized for their outstanding capacities in their respective majors. YU President Sur Gil-soo awarded each student personally and said, "I am very proud of our students who displayed their abilities in their fields and received recognition for their abilities." He added, "YU will provide full support so that the Y-type human resources of YU equipped with professionalism and creativity based on character can become global leaders of the world."

Analysis of data released by the college information website, 'Academy Info' Thesis performance per full-time professor in ‘SCI/SCOPUS international thesis performance’ 4th in nation Many theses with excellent quality [February 20, 2017] The thesis performance per professor at the YU School of Medicine (Dean Kim Jong-yeon) was found to be fourth in the nation. Recently, Medical Times analyzed the thesis performance of medical schools (excluding pre-med) released on the college information website, 'Academy Info'. Upon examining the 'SCI/SCOPUS international thesis performance' per medical school throughout the nation, it was found that the thesis performance per full-time professor at the YU School of Medicine was 0.9238, which equates to fourth in the nation. The thesis performance per full-time professor was highest at Seoul National University Medical School at 1.5337, followed by Yonsei University Medical School at 1.2748 and Sungkyunkwan University at 1.0897. The top three were all universities in Seoul, and YU placed fourth out of the 45 medical schools (including professional medical graduate schools) throughout the nation. The fact that the SCI-level international thesis performance per professor is high means that the actual research results of professors were excellent and that many papers with high levels of quality were written. YU President Sur Gil-soo said, "This demonstrates that the capacities of YU professors is of the highest level in Korea," while adding, "We will provide full support so that our university can be at the highest level in Korea in terms of both research and education."

YU President Sur who was appointed as the 15th president of YU by the Yeungnam School Foundation executive board on December 14 will lead YU for the next four years with the vision, 'incubator for of diligent and talented human resources, bright and strong university - Yeungnam University'. Mr. Sur earned his bachelor's in engineering at Seoul National University and his master's and PhD at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and served as a professor of YU from March 1978. He served in a number of major posts at YU including the vice-president of education, president of the external cooperation department, director of the education support office, and director of the industry-academic research office. Outside of YU he served as the vice-chairman of the Polymer Society of Korea, regional director of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk branch of the Polymer Society of Korea, and academic director of the Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. YU President Sur said, "I feel a great sense of responsibility and duty by taking on this important position as the university president at the 70th year anniversary of YU." He added, "Recently, the university society is faced with an unprecedented crisis. There is a growing interest throughout society on the operation and finances of universities, and all universities in Korea are now in an age of unlimited competition for survival. To construct industry-academic-research cooperation system and promote the industry in the photovoltaic sector Recently recognized for abilities externally such as being appointed as the MD of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Strategy Planning Team [February 6, 2017] School of Chemical Engineering Professor Park Jin-ho (58) was appointed as the fourth chairperson of the Korea Photovoltaic Society. His term is for one year until the end of this year. The Korea Photovoltaic Society was established in 2012 for the purpose of constructing an industry-academic-research cooperation system in the photovoltaic sector, which is a core technology among the 11 renewable energy sectors, as well as to promote R&D, technology transfers and relevant industries through academic activities. The society engages in projects such as the investigation, collection, research and exchange of academic materials, publication and distribution of academic magazines, hosting of academic conferences, academic exchange with related domestic and foreign institutes, industry-academic cooperation with national public institutes and other agencies, and development of policies for the development of the photovoltaic industry. Professor Park earned his PhD at the University of Florida in the US and is currently serving as a professor at the YU School of Chemical Engineering since September 1994. Professor Park was recently recognized for his capacities outside of the university by being appointed as the MD (managing director) of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's strategic planning team for a three-year term. There are nine energy PDs (program director) under the MD and the MD in in charge of managing the appointed PDs and establishing technology policies to supplement the lacking technological expertise of the officers. In 2015, Professor Park was selected as a regular member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, and is currently the government's 'future growth engine task force team' new renewable energy hybrid system task force team, the IEA (International Energy Agency) PVPS (Photovoltaic Power Systems Task 1 Korea representative, international cooperation department chairman and senior vice-chairman of the Korea Photovoltaic Society, and photovoltaic PD of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (currently Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy). Professor Park received the '24th Excellent Science Technology Paper Award' from the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Studies, and in 2013, he was awarded the 'Seokmyeong Excellent Chemist Award' from the Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers, which is Korea's top association in the chemical engineering sector.

Two year term until December 2018 Academic research organization for improving corporate productivity through management rationalization of facility assets Pivotal role in carrying out 'Korean Certified Facility Managers' qualification systems for facility management experts [February 3, 2017] YU School of Architecture Professor Kwon Jong-wook (55) was appointed as the 11th chairperson of the Korea Facility Management Association. His term is for two years until December 2018. The Korea Facility Management Association, which was established in 1994, is an academic organization that conducts research on the improvement of corporate productivity through the management rationalization of facility assets. It has over 4,000 individual members and over 50 corporate members. Professor Kwon joined the association as a member in 1996 and served as the vice-chairman in the academic sector and general affairs. He also played a pivotal role in enacting the Korean Certified Facility Manager (KCFM), which refers to experts in facility management, qualification system. Facility management (FM) refers to operations for efficiently integrating user, work space, work processes, and advanced information communication technologies to maximize the value of facilities and buildings possessed by companies. It is used in academic fields such as architecture, real estate, and management.

'Grand prize and participation prize' at the Farming Start-up Idea / Best Club Contest Good reviews for 'Eco-friendly, high nutrition edible insect popularization' 'Farming start-up item' created through research clubs related to majors [January 18, 2017] <YU Department of Food & Nutrition Research Club 'Ajabyo' that won the grand prize and participation prize at the 'Farming Start-up Idea / Best Club Contest'> This contest, which was hosted by the Rural Hope Foundation under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, is for start-up ideas for commercialization in various sectors including production, distribution/process, services, and 6th industries based on ideas and technologies in the food and agriculture sector. Students from 21 high schools and universities around the nation participated to show off their novel ideas. After preliminaries, 20 teams went to the finals to compete in presentations. In result, students of 'Ajabyo', a research club of the YU Department of Food & Nutrition, won the grand prize with the farming start-up idea titled 'Functional Foods Using Edible Insects' and the participation prize with the idea titled 'Cosmetics Using Grape Skin'. Department of Food & Nutrition juniors Han Jin-soo (24), Jung Hye-yoon (22), Park Yoon-ah (22) and Lee Jung-min (22) won the grand prize. They proposed functional foods that can actually satisfy consumer needs using edible insects that have been receiving interest as future food sources and attracted interest among participants. Team leader Han Jin-soo, who led the team for about five months to prepare for the contest, said, "We wanted to utilize what we learned in our major and publicize edible insects such as crickets and yellow worms." He added, "I think we received good evaluations from our idea that it would be possible to reach out to general consumers more easily using this environment-friendly, highly nutritious food using it powder-type food additives instead of the whole insect." YU Department of Food & Nutrition Professor Han Gi-dong, who is the advisor for 'Ajabyo', said, "This is the result of the hard work of students who traveled all around the nation looking for edible insects while taking part in the activities of the research club," and added, "Two of our teams were awarded in this contest by having undergraduate students engage in various types of research and coming up with ideas by participating in various contests." The YU Department of Food & Nutrition club 'Ajabyo' is a new undergraduate research club that was established in 2015 to enhance the food engineering capacities of students through research and field trips regarding their major.

School of Mechanical Engineering senior Lee Dong-hoon wins 'Local small and medium company R&D industry interns' award Most interns land employment while earning practical work experience High satisfaction in 'employment linked field work' for companies, universities and students [December 23, 2016] The employment-linked field work program pursued by local universities and companies is receiving huge attention from students preparing to graduate. The 'local small and medium company R&D industrial intern project' joined by YU students satisfied both students and companies searching for outstanding human resources and is being evaluated as a successful industry-academic cooperation program. The local small and medium R&D industry intern project' supports industry-academic cooperation between outstanding small and medium companies with universities in order to resolve the mismatch of R&D human resource supply & demand by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology. It is an employment-linked long-term field work program that selects industry interns among engineering school students to carry out R&D operations at a company for six months, which can lead to employment. This program is being operated through six consortiums around the nation such as the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region, Seoul-Incheon region, Gyeonggi-Gangwon region, Chungcheong-Sejong region, Honam-Jeju region, and Southeastern region. In the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region, the Gyeongbuk Techno Park and Gyeongbuk Creative Economy Innovation Center, four local universities, Kumoh National Institute of Technology, Catholic University of Daegu), and local outstanding small and medium companies are participating. A total of 55 students are participating as industry interns in 30 companies in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region. From YU, a total of 11 students are gaining field experience in the second half of 2016 at Korea Powertrain, Sewon Corporation, Sewon ENC, Avaco, Ena Industry, and Samkang. At a recent progress report meeting for this project, YU School of Mechanical Engineering senior Lee Dong-hoon (24, photo, left) took the grand prize after being recognized for his excellent work during his internship at Korea Powertrain. YU students won the grand prize for two consecutive years and most students go on to becoming employed at their respective company, and thus, there is a high level of satisfaction among program participants. Most of the YU student interns this year including Lee Dong-hoon recently confirmed their employment. Lee Dong-hoon said, "I am happy that I received the grand prize and confirmed employment. I am confident that my experience as an intern will help me adapt to the company as a new employee." He added, "The industry intern program is a program where students can learn and gain actual job experience not available for most students. I would recommend other students to also participate in such field-work programs." YU Student Capacity Development Office Director Yoon Sang-heum said, "Rather than just blindly looking to gain employment at conglomerates, it will be more helpful to pick a company you want to go to and gain internship experience to find the company and occupation that fits you." He added, "I hope that students will take full advantage of the various field work programs offered by the school."

The research power of YU Department of Chemistry is being highlighted for both undergraduate and graduate school students. Lim Young-hwan (26), who is currently in his master's degree program at the YU Graduate School of Chemistry recently won the 'Daerim Grduate School Paper Award' recently at the '2016 KICHE (Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers) Fall Academic Conference'. KICHE is Korea's top chemical engineering society with over 5,000 members. Mr. Kim won the grand prize with his research on 'performance evaluation of zinc-nickel flow cells'. Doh Jeong-yeon (25) also in a master's degree program recently won the 'Young Researcher Award' at the '2016 KICHE Fall Academic Conference' held recently at the Jeju Convention Center. The 'Young Researcher Award' is an award given to young and promising female science and technology professionals by the Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry and the Center for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology to encourage the passion of female science technicians and continued R&D. This is the second award winner from YU since Kang So-ra (2nd term in master's degree program at the time) who won the award in 2014. Doh also won the best paper presentation award at an academic conference hosted by KICHE earlier this year and won various awards in major chemistry-related academic conferences, thus being recognized for her capacities as a promising young scientist. Undergraduate students have also been keeping up the pace. Kim Sung-il (25) and Lee Jae-hyung (24), who are both seniors in the Department of Chemistry, both won the 'outstanding paper presentation award' at the '2016 KICHE Fall Academic Conference', showing off the research capacities of undergraduate students. Lee Jae-hyung published his research results on developing catalyst materials earlier this year in the SCI journal Materials Letters (impact factor (IF) 2.437) in the applied physics sector. They are all part of the YU Department of Chemistry mineral nano-new material class (Advisor Kang Mi-sook). They all agreed on the reason for their recognition in research capacities by Korea's top academic organization saying that it was the "result of continuously engaging in research with graduate school students." Students of the research center have been putting out excellent research results such as publishing papers in SCI journals every year even from their undergraduate studies. Furthermore, YU students were also awarded for four straight years from 2013 the 'Graduate School Catalyst Research Award' that is given to graduate school students with excellent research achievements every year by KICHE. Doh Jeong-yeon, who will be graduating from her master's degree program in February, said, "The tradition of our department will continue and be awarded at various conferences as our advisors and students are still working hard on research."
